Dancing on Air
Jack Hastings, Sewanee, Tennessee

In 1999, the airport commissioned Tennessee artist Jack Hastings to create two 15-foot aluminum mobile sculptures entitled Dancing on Air. Hastings' perfectly balanced, folded and curved metal pieces move slowly overhead in the wind currents as passengers enter and exit the concourse areas on either side of the terminal. The brilliant range of colors against the white terminal walls adds visual harmony to the live music often heard in these two locations within the airport terminal.

Dancing on Air is Jack Hastings's first major public art commission in Nashville, and was funded in part by the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission. Hastings, who has a background in architecture and who studied public mural painting in Mexico, works in a variety of media, including cast and carved concrete. Hastings' has other public works that may be found at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Chattanooga Office Complex and Tennessee's I-75 Interstate Welcome Center.
