Installed just outside the Ground Transportation Level in 1996, the whimsical, interactive play and rest area, Flights of Fantasy, features mosaic sculptures that include a magic carpet and two smiling airplanes. The seating area incorporates larger-than-life flying creatures such as a luna moth, a monarch butterfly and a dragonfly, all against a backdrop of blue sky, clouds and colorful streamers.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority commissioned artist Sherri Warner Hunter of Bell Buckle, Tenn., to design Flights of Fantasy as a place where airport visitors of all ages can relax and experience the imaginative allure of flight.

Hunter studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Mo., and the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, Calif., before moving to Tennessee in 1989. Hunter has exhibited frequently in Middle Tennessee and Missouri. Partial funding for Flights of Fantasy was provided by a creation grant from the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission.
