Christi Teasley of Monteagle, TN, has created these unusual fabric works specifically for Flying Solo. The panels explore the notion of literal and figurative journeys. She describes the expectancy and anticipation before a departure as something her great-grandmother called, “journey proud.” Teasley says, “the flurry of preparation, the mental checklist, the excitement, and the anxiety, float simultaneously as the mind readies for an expedition. Regardless of the journey’s purpose, emotions swing." The works are created by simple stitching; block printing and old mechanical resist methods intertwined with machine stitchery, silkscreen and digital printing. She allows natural processes such as rust and mildew and staining to take place on the fabric to illustrate time passing.
Teasley, who grew up in North Carolina, now lives on the southern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. She teaches art and directs the art gallery at St. Andrews-Sewanee School in Sewanee, TN. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI, and continued there to earn her Master's degree in Art Education. Teasley takes part in the national Surface Design and Studio Art Quilt associations, and her works have been chosen for such prestigious shows as Chicago’s annual SOFA (Sculpture Objects Fine Art) Exposition, “Le Chassy d’Or” International Art Quilt Exhibition in Bourgogne, France, and the Best of Tennessee Crafts juried biennial. |
