Flying Solo: Diane Fox - Concourse C

For the past ten years, Diane Fox has used water as a subject for her photography. Water's Edge, which is the series on view at Nashville International Airport, is a combination of four photographic bodies of work entitled Water Rites, Poolside, Beachside, and Beachscapes. These photographs examine both the physical aspects of water and the social activities in and around water. They reflect Fox’s interest in the immediacy of the photographic moment as seen in the work of the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. While the individual photographs frame bits of life, as a group they become a comment on society. Fox says, “People gather together around water--old, young, thin, fat, all colors, nationalities, and religions. The water washes down the walls of difference, if only for a moment. In the water most of us become, once again, children at play.”

Diane Fox received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn. and her Master of Fine Arts at graphic design and photography from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. She is currently an instructor in the College of Architecture and Design and the Department of Art at the University of Tennessee. Her work has been included in such recent group shows as Appalachian Corridors at the Sunrise Museum in Charleston, West Virginia and the 2003 Small Print Competition of the Camera Club of New York in New York City. Fox’s most recent solo exhibition was UnNatural History at the Bennett Gallery in Knoxville, Tenn.
