  Larry Jasud- Concourse C

Larry Jasud came of age in the Rock ’n’ Roll era of late 1960s America. More and more, he sees that as the true foundation of his artistic vision. In his brilliant, color photographs, we can almost hear the excitement of Americans at leisure, often involved in the things they are most passionate about. When Jasud moved to Memphis in 1981, he began photographing The Memphis in May barbecue competition. He says, "Public spectacles, particularly home grown ones, are perfect places to see popular culture at its most colorful and energetic best.”

Jasud grew up in Chicago and served in the U.S. Army, where he received his initial training as a photographer. After his travels with the army, he returned to the United States to study photography at Southern Illinois State University in Carbondale, IL, courtesy of the G.I. Bill. Graduate studies in photography took him to Ohio State University in Columbus. Since 1981 he has taught photography at the University of Memphis, where his guiding influence on students has been in his words, “the most constant source of satisfaction in my career.” Jasud’s works have been widely exhibited, awarded, and published throughout the United States and abroad. He is a prolific writer, critical thinker, and presenter at academic and photographic conferences. He is the recipient of Individual Artist Fellowships from the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Tennessee Eastman Company.
