The Newberry family, known as Newberry & Sons’
Chairs, has been making handcrafted chairs for
more than five generations. Located in Red Boiling
Springs, Tenn., the Newberry family consists today
of Louie C. Newberry and his sons, Terry Wayne
and Mark Lewis.
The family still makes chairs the
way their ancestors did using original chair design
patterns and tools – many of which are handmade,
passed down from one generation to the next.
Signature Newberry & Sons’ Chairs designs include
twill weave patterns for all woven seats and backs
and crooked back chairs, which are sometimes
referred to as common chairs.
While still preserving the family chair making tradition, Newberry & Sons’ Chairs incorporates modern business practices to respond to increased customer demand including a Web site. Please visit: www.newberryandsonschairs.com. |

Artist's Statement
“We have learned a lot that was passed down through the generations. We have modernized a bit, but each part is still hand-turned on a wood lathe. Each chair is still made one at a time and the bark is still harvested the same. There are three Newberry family members making chairs today, and with each person a little bit of history goes into each chair. Our prices are still reasonable so that we can share our heritage with others.”
