Participants at Outlook Nashville and Cumberland Heights worked with Daniel C. Prince, director of Self Taught Artists Resources (S.T.A.R.), to create fascinating works of art based on the subject of flight.
Outlook Nashville supports individuals with disabilities through day programming, supported living, employment for adults with developmental disabilities and support services for their families.
Cumberland Heights treatment encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of recovery from the disease of chemical dependency. Many of these participants used folk and pop art techniques, and their works reflect themes of flight as well as recovery.
S.T.A.R. facilitates the creation of art in a non-traditional way. They provide a wide array of materials and creation methods. The fresh work seen in this exhibit comes directly from these participants’ hands, hearts, and minds.
The S.T.A.R. archives, which contain thirty years of files and documentation on the subject of self-taught art, is available for public use by appointment at Vanderbilt University's Jean and Alexander Heard Library Special Collections.
