Susan DeMay - Fine Dining Area

Carving a dual career that spans over two decades, Susan DeMay has shared her knowledge of clay with her students at Vanderbilt University, while maintaining her professional ceramics studio, Creek Ferry Pottery, in Smithville, TN. With the help of her studio assistants, DeMay’s professional career has remained uninterrupted – from a production line of tabletop wares; to vases, tile projects and wall-mounted sculptures. Experimenting with form and electric-fired glazes, DeMay’s work retains a distinctive, vividly-colored appearance that garners exhibit opportunities both regionally and nationally.

  Artist Statement
“My handmade works in clay materialize in two directions – the functional production pieces and the fine art pieces. The fine art pieces, most of which are constructed using slabs of clay, take on a more unusual organic form inspired by modern painting, glass blowing, quilt patterns, nature and personal experiences. My choices have evolved over time, during the creation of a long series of work based on the marriage between craft techniques and aesthetic decisions.”
