John Toomey grew up in Martin, Tennessee. He received a bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Murray State University in Murray, Ky. He is also a certified Montessori educator and is the arts director for an elementary school near Albuquerque, N.M. Although he lives and works in New Mexico, it is the landscape of rural Tennessee that set him upon a path towards becoming an artist. He spent most of his childhood outdoors, roaming and exploring the woods and fields that surrounded his home. |

Artist Statement
“My art is communion with landscape. My imagery, which stems from both observation and improvisation, is born from dreaming upon the horizon, drifting towards sky and descending into soil. It is a dialogue between abstraction and representation, cause and effect, growth and decay. More invocation than description my work is a contemplation of forces which shape, veil, reveal, and reshape natural form.”
“Working Memory is a body of work in progress that contends with the gradual loss of my mother as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. These are mixed-media works on paper, made with acrylic paint, pastel and watercolor – but of special significance – each contains actual bits of organic material collected from the home such as pressed flowers, leaves, and soil."
