In 1885, Watkins Institute began operations through a $100,000
bequest by Samuel Watkins to be held in trust by the State of
Tennessee and used for the educational benefit of Nashvillians.
From creating the first public library in the city to offering free
public education for youth, Watkins’ early role addressed Nashville’s
unmet educational needs, including the arts.
The transition to Watkins College of Art, Design & Film began in
1977, when approval was received to offer associate degrees in
fine arts and interior design. The Film School opened in 1995 and
the college received national accreditation in 1996.
Today, Watkins offers regionally and nationally accredited bachelor
of fine arts degrees in Film, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Interior
Design and Photography, along with a bachelor of arts degree in
Art and a professional certificate in Film. As a private, not-forprofit
college, Watkins is a unique educational institution in Middle
Tennessee and is noted among leading art and design colleges in
the country.
