Betty Leigh Hutcheson's photographic series Urban Space studies the urban environment of New York City where she currently lives. Her photographs describe physical characteristics of the city, but also suggest a personal, contemplative space she finds within the public arena. Urban Space is a continuation of Interior Spaces, an earlier series based on work created while she was living in Memphis, which uses photographic techniques such as reflected light, selective focus, and shallow depth of field to depict a meditative state.
Hutcheson received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from the University of Memphis and a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Her works have been featured in exhibitions at the Ledbetter Lusk Gallery in Memphis, TN, the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, and The Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College in Memphis. Hutcheson's photographs are included in the collections of the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, AR, Bundeslandes Banc in New York, NY and Askew, Nixon, Ferguson Architects in Memphis, TN. |
