  Richard Feaster - Ticketing Level

Richard Feaster was born in Hagerstown, Maryland and later attended high school in Nashville. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Birmingham Southern College in 1985 and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Tulane University in 1992. He attended the Skowhegan summer program in Skowhegan, Maine in 1993. In 2002 he returned to Nashville after living in New York. He has had one-person exhibitions in Boston, Nashville, and Jackson and has participated in numerous group exhibitions across the northeast and southern U.S. In February 2006, he will have a solo exhibition at the Cheekwood Museum of Art’s Temporary Contemporary Gallery. He is represented in Nashville by Zeitgeist Gallery.

The title of one of the paintings in Feaster’s airport exhibition is Moonlight Maze. It was inspired by something the artist read about U.S. officials accidentally discovering a pattern of internet probing of computer systems at the Pentagon, NASA, Energy Department, private universities and research labs. In this piece, Feaster deals with the idea of such a pre-ordained pattern.

  Artist Statement
"These paintings are made with the implicit understanding of an invisible underlying structure. My challenge is to reveal this structure through the repeated erasure and revision of many freehand marks. These marks writhe and battle within the void (reflective graphite) in ways that simulate virtual webs, nets and other complex systems of interconnectedness. I find that the most captivating passages often come from the accumulation of many imperfections and mistakes in the mark-making process."
