Artist Isaac Aden has used steel plates as a medium for the past five years. Writer Gail Tauber describes his art as having "evolved by continual experimentation to reach a newer and ever more significant visual effect." Process is all-important to Aden. He manipulates steel plates, both hot and cold rolled, by washing them with various fluids and overlaying them with an assortment of materials like paper and plastic. The plates are timed, watched, dried, and eventually transformed - etched and rusted with gradations of color and shape - by chemical reaction. Aden compares this process to baking. The resulting work on steel may be used to transfer and print on paper, plastic or fiber. As much as possible, Aden's work is created to fit a particular space. Aden has created several series to date, including the 2002 installation Volatile Monolith at the Empire State Building.
