  Jeffery Morton - Ticketing Level

Jeffrey Morton received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Temple University, Tyler School of Art. Jeffrey Morton has worked with the landscape for more than twenty years. He lived in Japan for two years from 1987 to 1989 and it was this “out of culture” experience that influenced the way he works to incorporate a human presence in nature. The Japanese landscape, while it represents raw beauty, also represents a relationship between the raw landscape and how humans cultivate it. The subject of cultivation is a theme that has continued in his work to this day.

In 2000, Morton moved to southeastern Tennessee to discover a landscape that is different from his home state of Pennsylvania. The mountains and air of Chattanooga connect closely to his memory of the Japanese landscape. Exhibited nationally, Morton recently had a show by the name, “From Earth to Air: six years on paper” at The Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga Tennessee.

  Artist Statement
Morton says of his work, “While the images in this exhibition are rooted in art history, they are ultimately rooted in nature and the ways humans and creatures cultivate the environment. Paintings of wind, electricity, twilight, humidity, photosynthesis, and pollen are juxtaposed against creatures in flight. From the silent lunar moth to the loud and noisy cicada, and from the cool vibrant bluebird, these living creatures fill my air canvases with presence and intensity. These flying creatures picture the subject of air in ways that I cannot fully conceptualize .”
